The Power Of Poetry

To celebrate World Poetry Day today, 21 March 2025, we’ve gathered a selection of poems from our community history archive, written by people who live or have visited us here at Ecovillage Findhorn. You’ll find more inspiration in the archive, at Celebrating One Incredible Family.
Deeper Mystery, by Mary Inglis
Drop away
Let go
Let the fingers of your mind and expectations
relax
and release their hold.
Just turn away.
There is a deeper mystery at the heart of things that is calling you,
Calling you by the name you’ve had since the beginning of time.
A mystery that is nameless as yet,
Wordless.
But tangible and tender
Steady and sure.
Its presence will light your way.
Trust it.
Findhorn Bay, Scotland, by Geoffrey Oelsner
Deer flow ghostly
over silent
dunes
Owls announce positions
from dark perches
in the pines
Fluent clouds surge
over morning
surf
Two rainbows
in the photo
weren’t there when she took it
Exultant V’s of geese
Loft over us then
gone
Last purple heather
lanterns light
the land
Everything presents itself
in one white edgeless
pebble
When God and I Speak, by Dave Till
When God and I speak we don't always see eye to eye
He or she has plans for world peace
I have a plan for a second cup of coffee
He or she is a being of pure light
I am a being with peanut butter stuck in his teeth
He or she is tireless
Me, I'm sometimes tired before I get up
He or she is in everything
Me, I'm in a room 12 by 10
He or she stops at nothing
I stop for tea breaks
Timidly I ask God what his or her plan is for me
The answer comes that I am to find perfection within
To live in harmony with my fellow human beings
and with nature
And to take part in a New Golden Age
It's at that point I look round to see
If God is really talking to someone else.

I am a Peace of Nature
and I am Beautiful, by Richard Brockbank
He comes from the forest
drawn by the crystal light
out of the magic circle,
to a tender partner –
to a dance of Man and Nature.
But who is He that comes?
Each has his own connection
and understanding of what He brings.
Man, Animal, Bird, Nature Spirit –
He holds them all, and more.
Come – Come dance with me.

Now, over to you…
Grab a notebook and pen, find a quiet spot where you won’t be interrupted for ten minutes, and dive into writing a spot of poetry yourself. The theme is ‘Community’ and we invite you to create a haiku – 3 lines, with 5 syllables on the first and last lines and 7 syllables on the middle one. Whether you have visited us yet, or not, there’s lots of information and photos here on the Visit Ecovillage Findhorn website to provide inspiration. Enjoy!
